Dear OHES 5th and 6th grade Band parent:
This year Frye’s Music Service (FMS) is offering a purchase plan to band students at OEHS. The instruments offered by us are what I call beginner/intermediate instruments, and are similar to the beginner Conn trumpet my parents purchased when I was in 4th grade in 1959 (!), and identical to the trombone that Sharon and I purchased for our son last year for the OHES fifth grade band. There are even less expensive instruments out there, but I have sold quite a few of the instruments I am offering, and not one has come back. And yes, I will sell you clarinet or saxophone Rico Royal reeds at close to my cost! And for your convenience, you may pick all items up at our home in Ottawa Hills.
My only impetus for starting this program is to encourage students to study an instrument in the OHES band program. Having played in band from elementary through high school, I know the value of the discipline necessary to learn an instrument, and I also enjoy the lifelong enjoyment and enrichment of continuing to be able to create and play music on various instruments, which all started in elementary band. Because I have never sat and listened to a good performance without hearing the comment from someone, "I wish I could do that," my hope is that more OHES students will get involved in learning an instrument, which will not only augment and enrich their lives, but also be just plain fun as they learn to create music in larger ensemble settings.
This purchase plan is not about profit making for FMS. It’s about providing a service for our school music community. To that end you may conveniently view and pick up your instruments at our home at 3311 Gallatin Road.
If you purchase an instrument from FMS, you will be asked to make a deposit. With approved credit you can take 90 days same as cash to pay off the balance. If you decided to purchase the instrument outright, you will receive a 5% cash discount. At these prices, all sales are final on instrumental purchases. I do have an exchange policy of no questions asked with our manufacturers, in case it is discovered that something is wrong within 10 days of purchase. However, because the instruments are played before they are delivered, I don’t expect any problems. Unless there is manufacturer shortage, most instruments arrive two days after the order is placed.
Instruments will last a very long time if the player always puts the instrument back in its case after playing. 98% of the repair "problems" my company sees could usually have been avoided if that had consistently been done. However, accidents happen! I do not have a repair department. However, I will help you with repairs and maintenance when I can. For serious problems I have made arrangements with qualified local repair technicians, who promise me quick turn-arounds.
Finally, as your student advances, I do sell advanced and performance grade instruments, where I also offer large discounts on those instruments. And there are multiple models from which to choose, e.g., over 40 trumpets.
